Gas systems stop heating when the pilot light blows out or the thermocouple fails, and relighting it safely or swapping the failed part is usually a quick fix for us.
A failing tempering or pressure valve
A failing tempering valve or a choked pressure valve can drop the water lukewarm or cut flow to almost nothing, and both cost far less than a whole new system.
A tank that has finished its life
Tanks past their service life leak, rust or stop altogether. Around the older foreshore streets, units running well past their design life are the norm, so a full swap is often the honest answer.
Safe Checks Before You Ring
There are a few things worth checking before you call, and none of them involve tools or risk. Work through this list:

Check the power or gas
For an electric unit, see whether the isolator switch near the unit is on and hasn't tripped. For gas, confirm the gas supply is on and other gas appliances are working.

Try the taps in order
Run the hot tap at the kitchen sink and the bath. If every tap runs cold, the unit has failed. If only one runs cold, the fault is local to that tap.

A manufacture date on the compliance plate changes the repair-versus-replace conversation immediately.
If the isolator trips again after you reset it, leave it off. A faulty element is a job for a licensed plumber, not a second reset.
